Choose the area that matches your measurement
This shingle calculator starts with area, applies the selected area basis, adds a waste allowance, and estimates whole bundles. Select projected area when your number is the roof's horizontal footprint. Select measured roof surface when the number already follows the sloping roof, including a result from the roof area calculator.
The projected option applies pitch to obtain surface area. The measured surface option leaves the entered area unchanged before adding waste. Pitch still matters for checking shingle suitability, but it must not increase an already-measured roof surface again. Include overhangs and account for roof sections separately when their pitches differ.
Follow the bundle calculation
For a projected area of 1,200 square feet at 4:12, the roof surface is approximately 1,264.91 square feet. Adding the stated 10% allowance gives about 1,391.4 square feet of planned coverage.
At the assumed 33.3 square feet per bundle, that produces 42 whole bundles. The calculator retains precision through the area and waste calculations, then rounds the final bundle quantity up. Rounding intermediate values before dividing by bundle coverage can change an order near a bundle boundary.
If the same 1,200 square feet already represents measured roof surface, select that basis instead. It gives 1,320 square feet after the allowance and 40 bundles under the same coverage assumption. That difference is why labeling the area correctly matters before comparing estimates.
Check the assumptions against the actual product
The 33.3-square-foot bundle coverage and 10% waste allowance are planning assumptions. Package coverage differs among products, and a roof with many valleys or cuts can need a different allowance. Confirm coverage and the final quantity with the supplier before ordering.
This is a field-shingle estimate. Starter strips, ridge caps, flashing, underlayment, fasteners, and repairs need separate quantities. Do not treat the waste allowance as a complete accessory package or assume an existing roof's bundle count will match a replacement product.
Confirm that shingles fit the roof slope
Below 2:12, the tool withholds the bundle count because ordinary asphalt shingles are unsuitable. From that minimum to below 4:12, extra underlayment protection is required under GAF's low-slope guidance. Follow the chosen product's instructions and locally adopted requirements; a quantity estimate does not approve a roofing assembly.
